"She likes to do my nails, so I let her do my nails and I let her put stuff on my face," the 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' star tells PEOPLE of his granddaughter

Michael Keaton loves playing the role of grandpa.

As a granddad to his son Sean's kids River, 7, and Maggie, 5, the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice actor, 72, is always looking for new activities to pursue with his grandkids. He tells PEOPLE in this week's issue that River enjoys anything "sports-related," while Maggie "likes to do my nails."

"What I like to do, and I don't do often enough," Keaton admits, "is take them individually because they're always together."

He adds that he's "always so pumped" to go to dinner with Maggie, just the two of them. "Sometimes I'll take her by herself. She stays over with me by herself and she and I go to dinner, which I'm always excited about," he explains. "She could care less. I'm always so pumped to go to dinner."

Keaton then calls Maggie "the funny one," describing her as "quirky" and "curious."

"She's always kind of clocking you, reading you," he says, adding that during their sleepovers, "she likes to do my nails, so I let her do my nails and I let her put stuff on my face."

When it comes to getting alone time with River, Keaton says, "Anything we do is sports," adding that they're "certainly going to the ballpark or playing sports" during their one-on-one time.

"I don't coach him or anything, but I'm always at his games," the proud grandpa continues. "Or he and I are watching games on TV, or going to a Laker game, or a Pirates game, or a Steelers game."

While appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Aug. 19, Keaton spoke more about how he chooses to spend time with River and Maggie, recalling a funny conversation the two had in the back of his car.

"Sean's got a couple of children. My grandchildren. I'm not really that crazy about 'em," Keaton joked on the show.

"No, yeah. It's great. I love it. It's fantastic. It's so good, I don't even know where to start. People get tired of hearing from me," he continued before launching into his story. "I'm in the car and I'm driving, you know, with the two of them in the back. We're going somewhere ... I take them everywhere."

"And I hear them talking. I hear them talking in the back. And it's something like, 'No he doesn't.' I'm not paying any attention. I'm driving," the Batman actor said. "They go, 'Yeah. Look. You see?' And then I hear them saying things like, 'No, no, no he has some hair in the back. See?' "

"I swear to God," Keaton added. "And then he goes ... I think first it was like, 'No, it's not. It's white. It's not hair.' They're breaking it down," he laughed. "'Dude, I'm right here. I'm right in the front!'"
