National Book Foundation Announces the Longlist for The 2024 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature

The National Book Foundation confirmed the list’s 10 nominees, with five finalists scheduled to be revealed on Oct. 1

The Longlist for the 2024 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature has been announced.

In a press release obtained by PEOPLE on Tuesday, Sept. 10, the National Book Foundation confirmed that list’s 10 nominees, adding that five finalists will be revealed on Oct. 1, with winners announced live at the 75th National Book Awards Ceremony & Benefit Dinner on Wed., Nov. 20.

The contenders for this year’s award include Olivia A. Cole’s Ariel Crashes a Train, Violet Duncan’s Buffalo Dreamer, Margarita Engle’s Wild Dreamers, Josh Galarza’s The Great Cool Ranch Dorito in the Sky and Erin Entrada Kelly’s The First State of Being.

Other nominees includeRandy Ribay’s Everything We Never Had, Shifa Saltagi Safadi’s Kareem Between, Angela Shanté’s The Unboxing of a Black Girl, Ali Terese’s Free PeriodandAlicia D. Williams’s novel-in-verse, Mid-Air.

“Through fiction, nonfiction and novels-in-verse, the protagonists of the 2024 YPL Longlisted titles traverse societal, familial and individual expectations, and teach young readers the importance of self-love and forgiveness,” the release reads. “These characters consider historical and environmental issues, their personal impact on our present and future and reflect on their insecurities and strengths.”

The statement adds, “The stories span place and time, from a small town in Delaware visited by a time traveling teenager from 2199 to Philadelphia, Pa. at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.”

“Through thoughtful dialogue and character development, these authors deftly represent mental health issues, body dysmorphia, and much more, and reflect the complexity of how young people grow, think, and change,” the release continues.

Publishers submitted 333 books for the 2024 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature. This year's judges are Rose Brock, Huda Fahmy, Leah Johnson, Mike Jung and Brein Lopez, who also serves as the chair.
