'Unstable' Star Rob Lowe Reveals How Marrying Wife Sheryl Berkoff "Saved His Life"

It's not to hard to see that Rob Lowe is one of the busiest men in Hollywood. He's working on the hit shows Unstable and 9-1-1: Lone Star, all while being the host of The Floor. But at home, his life is a lot more simple, as he's had wife Sheryl Berkoff beside him for almost four decades. Though their road to love came with some major bumps, they were lucky to work through the obstacles and come out even stronger.

For Rob and Sheryl, their love story began like a romantic film. The two were initially set up on a blind date back in 1983, but didn't really hit it off until much later. When the two reconnected in 1989 to work on the thriller Bad Influence (he was starring in it while she was a makeup artist), they eventually began dating. As Rob later explained to People in January 2022, there was a spark with Sheryl that felt different for him from the other women he dated in the past.

"I had the feeling that if I was ever going to be able to make it work with anybody, it was Sheryl," he told the outlet.

Despite the couple's romantic beginning, there was one huge obstacle standing in their way. At the time, The West Wing alum was dealing with drug and alcohol addiction, which he told Variety in 2021 had started when he was a teenager. Rob eventually went into recovery in 1990, and as he told the outlet, part of the reason was the fear of losing the relationship he'd built with Sheryl.

"I remember thinking if I couldn’t make it work with Sheryl, then I wasn’t going to be able to make it work with anybody," he told the publication. "That was at least half the impetus for getting sober, because I knew I couldn't be in a long-term relationship unless I was."

What's more, he told Entertainment Tonight the same year how much Sheryl's influence changed his life overall. "Listen, she may have saved my life, really," he added. "I mean, she met me when I was at the end of my '80s run of wild boy craziness, and she was worth changing my life for."

Not only did Rob and Sheryl manage to stick it out, the two wed in July 1991. Two years later, in September 1993, the couple welcomed their oldest son Matthew. Their younger son John Owen was born in November 1995.

Rob was able to be the dad he wanted to be, telling People he loved being the parent who was involved in his kids' Little League games and serving hot lunch at their local school. But he and Sheryl also had an incredible influence on their kids, as John Owen pointed out in January 2022 how he had his parents' support through his own struggle with addiction.

"When you consider what he went through in his 20s, his meteoric rise and some turbulence, and being in the public eye for decades," he told People, "to come out a family man, a really, really good father, a really, really strong husband, and just a fun, kind guy to be around, that's the day-to-day example he sets."

"On the most personal level possible, when I was struggling with addiction, he was always there for me," John Owen added. "I credit that with being one, if not the main, reason that I'm sober and living a healthy lifestyle."

While Rob may be the star, he's always one to support his wife in whatever venture she has planned. When Sheryl launched her jewelry business in 2022, Rob was right by her side as a proud husband. What's more, he loves to showcase their love on social media, with him writing a romantic tribute to celebrate their 32nd wedding anniversary on Instagram.

"Today marks 32 years married to this beautiful, inspiring, nurturing, strong, industrious, hot, and wonderfully unique woman," he passionately wrote in July 2023. "I am SO grateful for the day she said she’d join me on our amazing life journey together. Happy Anniversary, Baby!!"

If that wasn't enough, Sheryl is still as smitten with Rob as ever, as she celebrated their love with a heartfelt Valentine's Day post in February 2024.

"Grateful to spend another Valentine’s Day with you @roblowe," she penned on Instagram at the time.

If this isn't a love story to be inspired by, we don't know what is!
