Local author bringing history of the Detroit Tigers to the Lenawee District Library

ADRIAN — A wide range of baseball information from the players who donned the Detroit Tigers English “D” to those who have/had ties with Lenawee County and more will be presented to the public during an informative presentation on the history of the Detroit Tigers Major League Baseball (MLB) team.

Tigers' enthusiast and local author Roger Yoder’s presentation on the famed Motor City baseball team is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, and serves as one of the initial September program of events at the main branch of the Lenawee District Library in Adrian, 4459 W. U.S. 223.

Registration is not required, and the event is free of charge. Tigers' fans of all ages are invited to attend, ask questions and learn some interesting facts about the Detroit Tigers.

According to information provided by Yoder, many players and owners representing the Tigers were from Lenawee, Hillsdale, Jackson and Washtenaw counties.

“Detroit Tigers: Michigan’s Favorite Sports Team” by Roger Yoder of Jerome covers the team's history beyond the major league players.

After the completion of his hour-long presentation, attendees will be able to purchase their own copy of Yoder’s published book, “Detroit Tigers: Michigan’s Favorite Sports Team.” The cost of the book is $34.92. Cash, check and credit cards are all accepted forms of payment, a news release from the Lenawee District Library said. Each book comes with free personalization and author signature if desired, and a Tigers team baseball card set that includes one of future Hall-of-Famer Miguel Cabrera.

The 500-page book includes stories of individual games and ballplayers, from Ty Cobb to Justin Verlander. Yoder focuses on the World Series championships and pennant winners from Tigers history and has special notes about players who have a Michigan connection, such as Adrian native Mike Marshall, the American League Cy Young winner in 1974 while with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Other Michigan-native mentions in the book include Frank Navin, Fred Knorr, Thomas Monaghan and Britton native Duane Below.

“Detroit Tigers: Michigan’s Favorite Sports Team,” was released in 2022 and has received recognition and international book honors.

“Yoder grew up on baseball, and his love for the sport eventually transitioned over to his professional life, writing the sports section for various newspapers around Lenawee County,” the library said, including The Hillsdale Daily News, Jackson Citizen-Patriot, and The Daily Telegram in 1980s. “It was this passion that inspired him to write his book, which includes stats and information on players, umpires and more from 1901-2021.”

Yoder is a Jerome Township resident in Hillsdale County, who, as he previously told The Daily Telegram when his book was published in 2022, has been fascinated by baseball statistics and “how you can relive a game through a box score.”

“I wanted to do a comprehensive book about the Tigers franchise,” Yoder said in an August 2023 interview. “A lot of books just focus on the major league ballplayers, the Tigers. This book gets into covering the franchise as a whole —the scouts, the broadcasters, the owners, the stadiums, even the umpires. It’s a good source for any Tiger fan no matter what their knowledge level.”
