Looking for fun events? Top 5 things to do around Tallahassee

As we approach the middle of steamy July we are looking for refreshing entertainment and, as usual, musical offerings do not disappoint.

The 46th Annual Swamp Stomp brings eight local bands to the Tallahassee Museum for chill acoustic jams on Saturday.

To cool things off, Blue Tavern is picking up the old Waterworks tradition with a celebration of ice in honor of inventor John Gorrie, who debuted his ice machine on Bastille Day (July 14) in Apalachicola in 1850.

1. Boogie at the Swamp Stomp

The oldest summer festival in the region is back this year with the 46th Annual Swamp Stomp on Saturday, July 13, on the shady grounds at Tallahassee Museum, 3945 Museum Drive. The Stomp features great local talent and acoustic-oriented Americana music.

Get outside, grab some fresh air, and relax with live music featuring folk, blues, contemporary acoustic, ballads, highlands and saltwater music. Cash Bar for 21+ guests. Tickets range from $14.50-$10. Visit tallahasseemuseum.org.

The Wandering Hours will drop by Blue Tavern for the last stop on their summer tour from 8-11 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 2024. Expect some extra-tight harmonies and punchy road-warrior humor.

The fun begins from 5-7 p.m. Friday with Kelly Goddard playing new tunes from 5-7 p.m., followed at 8 p.m. by Songwriters in the Round with host Craig Daniel Hardin and featuring Mary Z Cox, Frank Douglas and Barry Sager. Cover is $5.

The 2nd Saturday Old Time Jam get cooking at 4 p.m. with players and lovers of old time music, followed at 6 p.m. by "A Celebration of Ice!"

Having migrated from the late, great Waterworks stage, Blue Tavern is honored to commemorate Dr. John Gorrie with its "Celebration of Ice!," a short reenactment of Gorrie introducing his unheard of device, the first ice machine, at an Apalachicola Bastille Day in 1850.

Corine Samwel will put the cherie on top of the dramatic performance with her signature "La Vie En Rose." In honor of the day, Donna is creating a Sauvignon drink special: Guillotini! And for supper Pineappetit will be serving specialty pineapple bowls.

Stick around from 8-11 p.m. for the Wandering Hours, on a their last stop on their summer tour. Expect some extra-tight harmonies and punchy road-warrior humor. Banjo, mandolin, fiddle, guitar and upright bass underscore the Florida band's thoughtful lyrics and storytelling. Cover $10.

3. Get in the rhythm at House of Music

Local faves The Rhythm Remedy and the FZB Horns, brings its old school rockin’ soul dance revue to the House of Music, 2011 S. Monroe St., on Saturday, July 13. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show will start at about 8. The band features horn-driven dance tunes from Michael McDonald to Michael Buble and Al Green to Bill Withers. Bring your dancing shoes. Cover $10.

4. Shop for ceramics at Tallahassee Pottery Market

Looking for coffee mugs or a big beautiful bowl? Visitors to the Tallahassee Pottery Market can find a wide array of one-of-a-kind, handcrafted items such as mugs, vases, dishes, planters, and more, all created by local artisans with a passion for ceramics. The market runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at United Church of Tallahassee, 1834 Mahan Drive.

5. Spotlight on 'Sapphism in Song'

June may be Pride Month, but the Mickee Faust Club, known for its non-conformity and persistence in promoting often-unheard voices, is carrying Pride into July with Jennifer Lamont’s "Sapphism in Song," featuring English Art Songs by LGBTQ+ Women Composers from 1900 to the present.

Lamont is a recent graduate of FSU’s College of Music with a major in Voice Performance. The Mickee Faust Club invited Lamont to present "Sapphism in Song" as part of its 17th Queer as Faust Festival with an educational outreach show free to teachers and students at 7 p.m. Friday. The performance is at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at First Presbyterian Church, 110 N. Adams St. Tickets are $10. Visit mickeefaust.com.

Quincy Airport Open House: The world wide organization for pilots & aviation enthusiasts EAA's local chapter 445 invites the public to come to the Quincy Airport starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 13, to see general (personal) aviation airplanes. Some will be flying depending on the weather. Walk around the hangers and look at airplanes including those being built by individuals. The airport is located off King Street just after highway 61.
