Looking for fun events? Top 5 things to do around Tallahassee
A big, bad storm is brewing, casting a cloud of uncertainty over the entertainment forecast for the weekend.
Here's what we know now. We recommend checking to make sure events have not been derailed by incoming Hurricane Helene. Some of these events may end up getting postponed so we are keeping it short this week.
Most importantly, stay safe.
Here's a roundup of entertaining events planned around Tallahassee, culled from emails, the Council on Culture & Arts online listings and elsewhere.
1. Tallahassee Bard Crawl with Southern Shakespeare
The Southern Shakespeare Company has slowed down the “Tallahassee Bard Crawl,” and postponed Friday's performance due to Hurricane Helene. The group is still assessing and may go forward with performances on Saturday, Sept. 28, (2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.) If so, a chartered trolley will transport ticket holders to four stops in the capital city to experience a round of refreshments and Shakespearean performance (Proof Brewpub, Hummingbird Wine Bar, Hayward House, and Proof again).
The Crawl’s Shakespearean scenes will range from comedy to tragedy, but each scene will use the environment of the restaurant, bar or pub in which it is performed. The tour includes scenes from “Romeo and Juliet,” “Hamlet,” “Henry IV, Part I” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The journey is slated to begin at Proof Brewpub (1320 S. Monroe St.) and runs about two hours long. Proceeds from the event will support Southern Shakespeare Company’s 10th anniversary season, including the free 2025 Shakespeare in the Park festival running May 8-11. The Festival mainstage will be “Henry IV, Part I.” For information and tickets ($55) visit southernshakes.org.
2. Meet Katie Skene and friends at House of Music
Tallahassee native Katie Skene returns to town and hits the stage at House of Music, 2011 S. Monroe St., with Chris Skene and special guests for a show at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Katie Skene Band is a blues & Americana band that infuses southern rock with the cosmic sounds of California. Tickets are $12 general admission ($15 day of show) and $20 front section seating. Visit houseofmusictally.com.
3. A June Star at Blue Tavern
Here's the Friday plan for Blue Tavern, 1206 N. Monroe St.: happy hour from 5-7 p.m. with Greg Brown and a mix of originals and covers inspired by old school country, bluegrass, and folk. Mike Lagasse & Reptile Dysfunction String Band with Swinglewide take the stage from 8-11 p.m.
If the planets align, June Star will light up Blue Tavern from 8-11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28. Baltimore, Maryland’s, June Star (Andrew Grimm and Dave Hadley) deliver aching vocals and plaintive folk arrangements. Grimm’s rich baritone voice and Hadley’s atmospheric, pedal steel brings a time-honored aesthetic to their tales of fractious love, quixotic anxiety, and the power of redemption. $10 cover.
June Star has performed in nearly every state of the Union and has traveled to Florida before; Andrew Grimm played at Blue Tavern with Ellen Cherry in the "before times;" this will be his first appearance with June Star at the tavern. For details visit junestar.com.
Bluesday Tuesday is set to go with Steve Sternberg at the piano from 8-10 p.m. Tuesday. Tallahassee's own boogie-woogie piano man is back at the tavern with blues piano, and a tribute to the New Orleans piano professors. $5 cover.
On Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. Tallahassee mainstay Jon Copps is slated for happy hour, followed by Open Mic Night at 8 p.m. On Thursday, Conor Churchill plays 5-7 p.m., followed at 8 p.m. by Music of the Spheres with Paddy League.
