Luis Severino signing one-year deal with the Mets, reports say

Luis Severino is changing boroughs.

After spending all eight of his major-league seasons with the Yankees, the 29-year-old right-hander will be joining the Mets in a deal first reported by MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. Severino and the Mets are in agreement on a one-year, $13 million contract for the upcoming 2024 season, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

The Mets will be hoping that Severino can regain the form that made him an All-Star in 2017 and 2018. Last season, Severino posted a 4-8 record with a 6.65 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 18 starts. He opened the season with a low-grade lat strain and was shut down with one month to play following a left oblique strain.

Severino also dealt with a lat injury during the 2022 season, which sidelined him for more than two months in the second half. He was 7-3 with a 3.18 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 112 strikeouts in 2022 after only making seven appearances in the prior three seasons. He suffered a rotator cuff injury in 2019 and underwent Tommy John surgery in 2020.

The native of the Dominican Republic earned back-to-back All-Star selections in 2017 and 2018 while finishing in the top 10 in American League Cy Young voting after both seasons.

Severino figures to give the Mets another option in the back of their rotation, joining forces with Kodai Senga and Jose Quintana. The Mets lost left-hander David Peterson for the first one or two months of the season due to hip surgery, while Tylor Megill, Joey Lucchesi and Jose Butto also provide depth in the team's starting pitching ranks.
