After making multiple roster moves, Marlins turn to offense to outslug Phillies 9-5

These Miami Marlins made a long list of roster moves on Saturday after using five pitchers during Friday’s blowout loss to the Phillies.

Most notably, rookie pitcher Max Meyer was placed on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Wednesday) because of right shoulder bursitis. Right-handed reliever Anthony Bender, who had not pitched since Aug. 10 against San Diego, returned from the injured list.

Bender worked the eighth inning of Saturday’s 9-5 win, giving up two runs on three hits, while striking out one.

In August, manager Skip Schumaker talked to the media about limiting Meyer’s innings, who was slowly making his way back from undergoing Tommy John Surgery in 2022.

The past couple of starts, however, have been forgetful for Meyer — coughing up six earned runs Aug. 6 vs. Cincinnati, four in back-to-back outings Aug. 11 and 17 and five in his most recent vs. Washington Sept. 3.

There was not a specific roster move made for right-hander Edward Cabrera, scratched from his scheduled start at approximately 5:30 p.m. Friday because he was experiencing migraine-like symptoms, resulting in a trip to the hospital.

Cabrera called a trainer to deliver the news and the latest came from Schumaker, saying Cabrera was out of the hospital.

If everything flows well and assuming a move is not conducted early tomorrow, Cabrera could be on track to start the series finale Sunday at 1:40 p.m.

On the offensive side, although not in the starting lineup Saturday, the Marlins selected Javier Sanoja from Triple A Jacksonville, who is rated as the No. 14 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.

Sanoja, pinch-hitting in the seventh inning Saturday, produced two runs after a throw from Trea Turner on a soft grounder went to the back of the screen behind home plate.

“The next Jose Altuve [is] coming up,” said MLB agent Henry Sandoval.

Listed as a shortstop, second baseman and outfielder, Sanoja, 22, was signed by the Marlins in 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed Sanoja’s professional debut for two years.

With 20 games to go and postseason play out of the equation, the Marlins are hoping to see a handful of important at-bats from Sanoja to see where he fits within the organization, after recently calling up prospects Connor Norby — who delivered a towering two-run home run in the first inning Saturday, Kyle Stowers, seeing the baseball well as of late, and Griffin Conine.

Connor Norby homered and drove in three runs as the host Miami Marlins snapped Philadelphia’s six-game win streak.

The Marlins had six of their nine starters turn in multi-hit games, including Xavier Edwards, who also had two steals, and Jonah Bride and Otto Lopez, who each homered.
