This Metuchen restaurant is getting the Guinness World Record for having the most tequilas

Meximodo, Metuchen’s hot new Mexican restaurant, is bold, colorful and colossal from your first step in the door from Town Plaza.

Despite everything vying for your attention, one thing in the restaurant is sure to capture your attention first – the towering bar brimming with more than 1,000 tequilas, mezcals and agave spirits around a Day of the Dead mural.

Soon that collection will be even harder to miss.

The Guinness World Records will designate Meximodo as the bar-restaurant with the most varieties of agave spirits commercially available in the world at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday July 24 – which just happens to be National Tequila Day.

Meximodo didn’t seek to win the title. But as it began assembling the agave spirit list for the opening last October, it became obvious the establishment could be a contender for a Guinness World Record.

Le Malt Hospitality, which owns Meximodo, spent months gathering and itemizing agave spirits to create the list, including both massive tequila brands and small, family-owned brands discovered through research. Le Malt Hospitality had an advantage because it owns the Wine Chateau online liquor store.

The Meximodo team, guided by Puerto Vallarta native and executive chef Antonio Carballo, also visited Mexico to experience the region where tequila originated.

While in Mexico, they saw the cultivation of agave plants, the distilling of the raw ingredients, and of course, tasted the final products. They also toured local villages to learn about rare, small-batch tequila and mezcal producers unknown to U.S. distributors.

Besides offering 1,000 agave spirits daily, Meximodo has books detailing each of the restaurant’s agave spirits on every table. The restaurant also hosts twice-monthly tequila tastings and distiller visits. The next is a Miraflores Chicha Morada Liqueur tasting and dinner 7-10 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 for $90 per person with reservations available at meximodo.com/events/p/miraflores.
