Mini Aussie Caught on Home Camera Destroying Back Deck Doesn't Have a Care in the World

Ever have a dog who liked to get revenge? My dog would communicate her displeasure after being taken to the groomers by finding the biggest, most disgusting mud puddle she could on her next walk, and lying down in it. The Mini Australian Shepherd in this video is having a similar reaction to the indignity that is bath time—except he’s destroying the furnishings on his back porch.

And his family caught it all on camera.

In this video, a Mini Aussie in Tennessee by the name of Remy is seen on a porch security camera leaping, diving, and rolling all over the cushions of the outdoor sofas until they are strewn across the floor of the deck.

“Get an Aussie, they said,” reads the rueful caption over this hilarious clip, and dog owners everywhere have seen this kind of energetic, “zoom” response to a poor pup being bathed. It is unclear in this clip is Remi is actually trying to be destructive or is just trying to rub the offending shampoo smell out of his fur.

Guess he couldn’t find a mud puddle.

The History of the “Mini Aussie”

Miniature Australian Shepherds are also called Miniature American Shepherds due to the complex rules around dog breeding and certification in the United States. But don’t get it confused. Though the name of the breed remains a controversial one among its community of fans, everyone still knows what dog you are talking about. The breed was creative by successively breeding generations of naturally smaller Aussie Shepherds until a breed standardd was achieved by the community.

And don’t be fooled. These little guys are very similar in temperament, appearance and—importantly—activity level as their larger cousins.

Is a Miniature Australian Shepherd Right For You?

Australian Shepherds are a popular breed of dog due to their adorable appearance and boisterous behavior. But these very traits can also come with down sides, especially for dog owners unprepared for the sheer amount of energy these dogs have, and the damage they can do if they are not properly handled.

Australian Shepherds are working dogs, who have been bred to control herds of livestocks, sometimes over large distances in the outback of Australia. As such they are among the most intelligent and most athletic breed of dog, with enormous stamina and extremely high exercise needs, It’s not unusual for Aussie owners to say their dogs need three or four hours of hard exercise a day.

Dogs who aren’t given enough exercise can become mischievous or destructive, as seen here. And smart dogs, like Australian Shepherds, are especially treacherous when boredom sets in. I have a friend with an Aussie who actually turns her TV on to keep the poor girl occupied. (She especially loves the dire wolves on Game of Thrones—but hates the dragons.)

Miniature Aussies also share the same genetic issues as their larger cousins. The popular “merle” coloration which can lead to an Aussie’s striking blue eyes and speckled fur is truly beautiful, but breeders must be careful when working with animals who possess this coloration, as “double merle” combinations can be born with genetic defects such as blindness and deafness.
