Miranda Lambert’s husband, a former NYPD officer, co-wrote one of her songs: ‘He was actually pretty good’

Miranda Lambert’s husband, Brendan McLoughlin, can now add songwriter to his resume.

McLoughlin is credited as a co-writer on Lambert's new song “Dammit Randy” from her 10th studio album, "Postcards from Texas," which was released Sept. 13.

During an interview on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna, Lambert revealed the story behind her husband's role on her album, and she said it all started in 2020 when they had some extra time on their hands.

"We started writing in 2020, when we were home, like for fun, and he was actually pretty good. He's a retired NYPD officer. I was like, 'You're pretty good, actually,'" she recalled. "So then we were writing for this record, and he's dabbled a little bit in it, just with me — for fun."

Lambert explained that it helped making music with McLoughlin because he understood everything that she was going through at the time. She said she got out of a long record deal and had "a whole new team" with Republic Records and would also work with Nashville's Big Loud.

"I just felt really excited that I was with a team that led with art," she said. "So I had been, sort of, griping to my husband about the end of that relationship that wasn't serving me anymore. So who better to write a song like that with you than the person that you talk to about it every day? But he was watching football, and I was like, 'You don't get to do both.'"

"And he chose you," Jenna Bush Hager said.

"That's true love," Lambert replied.
