Are These The Most Versatile Men's Trousers for the Fall?

When you think of an Italian wool trouser, it makes sense that one might assume that they are reserved for formal occasions. There's an air of sophistication with the pleats, the fabric is quite nice, and they are often made with a matching suit jacket. But, here's the truth: they look just as good, if not cooler, for casual occasions.

Take a look at Lucky Blue Smith's Instagram. The icy blue-eyed model (who just walked for Ralph Lauren's Spring 2025 show in the Hamptons ) is the master of the off-duty trouser look. He often styles them with a tank top or t-shirt and sneakers. When he poses with his vintage mid-century blue Corvette, he becomes the poster image of a '50s Hollywood star.

While I certainly don't have the same steely look as Smith, I do try to emulate this nostalgic sartorial choice. My go-to trousers are by Todd Snyder which are wider than regular fits. As a former competitive swimmer, this is helpful because they don't hug my legs too tightly and are significantly more comfortable (pants are a pain for me to buy, and anything that looks too tight is not a good look). There's a breeziness to these pants as I walk, and I think when you contrast it with a slimmer top (like a tank top, or a shirt tucked in), it gives off a very flattering silhouette.

But, we shouldn't take away the pant's versatility. The pair will work well for formal occasions, too. While redoing my guest house, I came across a very old 90s Giorgio Armani catalog. Like most, I loved that era when the European fashion house knocked away the structured 80s power suit and offered something more flexible. These pants are reminiscent of that. When you pair it with a matching jacket or wear it with a white shirt, you embody a timeless relaxed elegance; like Alain Delon in Purple Noon (yes, it took his passing for me to finally sit down and have a marathon of his work). Suddenly, you're not just wearing a suit. You're wearing a suit that turns you into the lead character, whether it the movie you're in takes place on Route 66, or on your everyday commute to the office. They're my style staple for the season.
