Old Dominion might be three-touchdown underdogs when it comes to Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday, but the Monarchs will leave winners regardless.

As part of getting Old Dominion to play the Gamecocks, South Carolina will pay ODU $1.5 million for its participation.

Though it’s more money than any South Carolina football coach not named Shane Beamer makes, it is about par for the course for these kinds of games. Two years ago, the Gamecocks paid both Georgia State and Charlotte $1.4 million to suit up in Williams-Brice Stadium.

The Monarchs, coming off a 6-7 season, play two Power-4 teams in 2024: South Carolina and Virginia Tech.

Granted the Virginia Tech matchup is part of a long-term agreement between the two schools and will be played at ODU this season. Old Dominion’s campus is in Norfolk, Virginia.

Per the contract for the season opener, South Carolina must pay Old Dominion the $1.5 million by Jan. 31, 2025.

Other notes about the contract:

  • South Carolina has to provide Old Dominion with 2,000 tickets that ODU can sell at a price determined by USC. If the Monarchs didn’t sell all 2,000 tickets, they have to return the unsold tickets to USC four weeks before the game.

  • Old Dominion is allowed 60 sideline passes for coaches, trainers and other workers.

  • Old Dominion is allowed to bring its cheerleaders and mascot.

  • The Old Dominion athletic director gets a suite/box for the game.
