Natalie Portman's new Apple TV+ series Lady in the Lake has landed a fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes after its first reviews.

The seven-part thriller, which is now available to watch on the streaming service, is set in 1960s Baltimore and stars the Oscar winner as Maddie Schwartz, a mother and housewife who is eager to reinvent herself as an investigative journalist.

However, while investigating the murder of an 11-year-old child and a bartender called Cleo (The Queen's Gambit's Moses Ingram), Maddie's own dark secrets begin to surface.

Other cast members include Stranger Things' Brett Gelman, Superman's David Corenswet, A Quiet Place Part II's Noah Jupe and Insecure's Y'lan Noel.

At the time of writing, Lady in the Lake has a fresh score of 68% on Rotten Tomatoes from 37 reviews.

Here’s what some of the critics have been saying:

Indie Wire

"Like many vibe-heavy endeavours, if you aren’t attuned to its rhythms, it’s easy to drift off entirely. But the series is just as easy to admire for how thoroughly it subverts expectations, as well as its exhaustive love for its leads."

Washington Post

"Clocking in at a modest seven episodes, this adaptation manages to feel both expansive and propulsive; it might not feature as many points of view as the novel, but it still feels like a page-turner."

The Times

"If you like the weirdness, great, it gets a whole lot weirder. And if it sometimes feels in the early episodes as though atmosphere wins out over anything more tangible, the twists that come later are worth the wait."

The Hollywood Reporter

"I wish the disparate pieces in Lady in the Lake came together a bit better, that it worked as an essay and a tone poem and a thriller on equal terms. But I still found its aspirations, unevenly fulfilled, to be admirable."

Lady in the Lake is available to stream now on Apple TV+.
