Netflix reveals first look at The Platform sequelNetflix

Netflix has given fans a first look at the surprise sequel to The Platform.

The Spanish-language film debuted on the streaming service in 2020, just when everyone was stuck in their homes needing something to watch. During the movie's first four weeks on Netflix, a whopping 56 million households streamed it.

The Platform is set in a vertical prison system that residents dub "the pit". It follows Goreng (Iván Massagué) as he tries to make sense of his new situation, where inmates are fed using a platform that moves downward through the prison, meaning those at the top are able to get the most food.

Out of nowhere on Thursday, May 11, Netflix announced a sequel to the film, sharing a series of first-look photos on Twitter.

"The story is far from over..." the caption reads.

"Here's your first look at our sequel to The Platform, the most popular Spanish film in Netflix history, once again directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia."

There's no word yet on the film's plot, title, or release date. However, we do know it will star Hovik Keuchkerian and Milena Smit, who are seen in the images.

Back in 2020, director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia revealed to Digital Spy that The Platform originally had a different ending.

"We actually did film a different ending of the girl arriving at the first level, but we took it out of the movie," he said. "I'll leave what happens to your imagination."

Gaztelu-Urrutia went on to tease that the actual ending may all be in a dying Goreng's mind.

"To me, that lowest level doesn't exist. Goreng is dead before he arrives, and that's just his interpretation of what he felt he had to do," he added.

"Ultimately, I wanted it to be open to interpretation, whether the plan worked and the higher-ups even care about the people in the pit."

The Platform is now available to watch on Netflix.
