Several people passed out and were treated for heat-related illness during an event Saturday night at Richard Allie Middle School in Crowley, according to the Crowley Fire Department.

Officials evacuated the building, at 1033 McCart Ave., around 7 p.m., and four people were treated at the scene while one person was taken to a hospital for additional treatment, the fire department said.

According to Crowley school district officials, the incident occurred during a non-school event that ran over its scheduled time. The air conditioning in the middle school was working but was only turned on during the scheduled time for the event, which was supposed to end at 4 p.m., Crowley ISD said in a statement.

“We are working with event organizers who rented the school to investigate the incident,” the district’s statement said.
