Changes proposed for Topgolf in Edison that neighbors would likely appreciate

EDISON – Changes may be coming to the operations of Topgolf on Route 1 that nearby residents will likely welcome.

Topgolf Edison is scheduled to appear before the township Planning Board Monday to seek amendments to the final site plan and variance approvals previously granted.

Topgolf, a golf and sports entertainment facility located at 1013 Route 1 in the Edison Towne Square Development which opened in 2016, offers competitive golfing games for all ages and skill levels and advanced technology to track players’ shots.

The applicant, which previously received approval to be open to the public from 8 to 2 a.m., is now looking to close the facility to the public an hour earlier at 1 a.m., according to documents filed with the township.

In addition, Topgolf is seeking approval to reduce the intensity of the façade venue lighting, which illuminate the outfield target areas at the facility, from 100 percent to 30 percent intensity, the documents say.

Topgolf is also seeking approval to discontinue the use of the stadium lights, located on support poles above the facade of the facility, as well as to turn off at 8 p.m. two high-definition field screens at the rear of the facility.

The three-level, 65,000-square-foot venue features 102 climate-controlled golf bays for year-round play, a chef-driven food and beverage menu, music, private rooms for corporate and social events, and hundreds of high-definition televisions. Nongolfers can use the pool tables, shuffleboard and foosball.

Topgolf is located near the Supercharged indoor go-kart track and entertainment venue on the Route 1 site that formerly housed a Ford assembly plant. Residents living near Supercharged last year complained to the Township Council about the noise and garbage at that business that was picked up around 4 a.m., noise from an elevator than ran until 1 a.m., and exterior lights that shined into nearby homes all night long. Police spoke with the business owner to address the residents’ concerns.
