Chiefs wide receiver Hollywood Brown, who suffered a shoulder injury on the first snap of the team’s preseason opener at the Jacksonville Jaguars Saturday, will not need surgery, KC coach Andy Reid said Monday.

Brown suffered a dislocation of his sternoclavicular shoulder joint on a tackle after the 11-yard reception from Patrick Mahomes. He left the field and headed to the locker room before the quarter ended.

Brown spent Saturday night in a Jacksonville hospital but was back in Kansas City Sunday.

“They were able to get the joint back in place without surgery, which is a good sign,” Reid said.

After the game, Reid compared the injury to one then-Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill suffered on the same field in the 2019 opener. Hill missed the next four games.

Reid didn’t set a timetable for Brown’s return, and said after the game, “I think he’ll miss some time.”

Brown wasn’t the Chiefs’ first option on the play. It was actually called for rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy, but Worthy was covered when Mahomes released the ball.

“They (Jaguars) kind of took away my play, so I was upset about that,” Worthy said.

Worthy said Brown sounded upbeat in their conversation later Saturday.

“He was in pretty good spirits,” Worthy said. “He’s just looking to come back and get ready to work.”

Several players who didn’t play Saturday and haven’t been practicing returned to the field for a non-padded workout Monday. Safety Justin Reid, linebacker Nick Bolton and wide receiver Kadarius Toney were able to take part. Reid has been dealing with a quad injury and hasn’t practiced during training camp.

Bolton suffered an elbow injury about two weeks ago and had his left arm wrapped. Toney had missed time with a back issue.

Among those absent from practice were running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (illness) and safety Bryan Cook (personal reasons).
