Classic movie fans will recognize this San Francisco property. Renting chapel part of deal

A top-floor corner condominium in San Francisco, with panoramic city and bay views, is for sale in a historic pink building that was originally built in the 1920s as a convent and hospital.

The price is right, but the unit is small. The one-bedroom, one-bathroom, 719-square-foot condo is listed for $899,000.

Yet, living at 351 Buena Vista Ave. Unit 802E offers some distinct points of pride and cool amenities.

For example, the registered historic building — a two-structure, 136-unit Park Hill condominium complex — was featured in a scene from the 1958 Alfred Hitchcock psychological thriller “Vertigo,” starring James Stewart and Kim Novack.

Also, the building’s remarkable reception space was formerly a chapel. Residents can reserve the gorgeous onsite stained-glass chapel for private parties.

The East building is where nuns resided, and the West Building served as the hospital.

The buildings were designed by renowned architects John Bakewell Jr. and Arthur Brown Jr., of Bakewell and Brown architectural firm, known for their work on the City of Paris department store, San Francisco City Hall, Temple Emanuel-El, and the San Francisco Art Institute. They were converted to condominiums in the late 1980s, according to Compass real estate firm.

The unit is for sale for the first time by the original owner, according to Compass. The home has been thoroughly updated and refreshed.

“351 Buena Vista was originally both a convent and hospital, with a beautiful chapel that residents can reserve for their private events,” Compass agent Gayle Langston told the Sacramento Bee in an email. “I hear the annual Halloween party is wild.”

Langston said Hitchcock used an exterior shot of the Saint Joseph’s Hospital building where James Stewart’s character Scottie Ferguson is convalescing as a result of a traumatic incident.

“The seller is the original owner and has recently had this top floor condo updated with a modern flair,” she added. “He insisted on having a washer and dryer in the unit for the new owners, along with all new appliances.”

The complex is located across the street from Buena Vista Park. The Haight-Ashbury neighborhood is on one side of the hill and The Castro on the other, where dining, shopping and entertainment venues can be found

“Parking is ideal, whether it’s your secured dedicated parking or street. In the city, imagine that,” Langston said.
