‘Determined to rebuild.’ Patton Township church launches GoFundMe after 2-alarm fire

After a two-alarm fire destroyed its church sanctuary last weekend, the Woodycrest United Methodist Church community is starting the slow process of rebuilding.

In a post on Facebook, Pastor Renee Ford thanked the community for support and announced the launch of a GoFundMe to cover rebuild and renovation expenses.

“The sanctuary and older portions of our building were a total loss, and the fire caused extensive damage throughout the church,” Ford wrote. “Despite this heartbreaking situation, our faith remains strong, and we are determined to rebuild and restore our place of worship.”

Crews responded after midnight last Saturday to the fire on the roof of the 88-year-old church at 219 W. Clearview Ave. in Patton Township. The fire was under control within 45 minutes, but part of the building was completely destroyed. Ford wrote that the cause of the fire was still unknown but the investigation is ongoing.

The GoFundMe campaign raised more than $2,100 of its $10,000 goal as of Thursday afternoon, with Ford hopeful that it will raise at least $2,500, enough to cover the church’s insurance deductible. While insurance will help with rebuilding costs, it won’t help provide a place for temporary worship or replace items lost.

Ford wrote that the church has begun collaborating with local restoration companies to begin the work of clearing out and rebuilding, but efforts will take time.

“The church is deeply grateful for the community’s prayers and support as we begin the process of rebuilding,” Ford wrote. “Any contributions of time, talent, or treasure will help us recover and continue our mission in the community.”

Despite the loss, services are planned to continue with outdoor worship planned for 10 a.m. on Sunday.
