This new business will allow for man’s best friend to join him at the bar.

With no opposition from the public or any Myrtle Beach City Council members at their Tuesday meeting, a dog park bar zoning change made its way to the next round.

The company that originally pitched the idea to the Myrtle Beach Planning Commission, Wagbar, currently operates their original location in North Asheville, North Carolina.

“It seems to be a pretty happening spot, I guess people like their beer and they like their dogs,” Myrtle Beach Planning and Zoning Department Director Ken May said at Tuesday’s council meeting about the North Asheville location.

Wagbar staff has not yet replied to The Sun News’s request for comment on the new project.

According to the company’s website, nine other locations are currently in the works in Los Angeles; Dallas; St. Petersburg, Florida; South Asheville, North Carolina; Savannah, Georgia; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Greenville, South Carolina; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Cary, North Carolina.

There are no specific opening dates for these new locations listed on Wagbar’s site as of Wednesday morning.

In order to open a location in an empty lot in the Market Common district, owners had to work with planning commissioners to draft a new ordinance that would amend the current zoning to allow for bar and tavern use in the Light Manufacturing District based on their affiliated outdoor space, instead of revenue.

Based on the current plans detailed in the proposed ordinance for the zoning change, “the facility shall have no less than 65% usable space not to include parking.”

This plan was unanimously passed in the Aug. 20 planning commission meeting. It’s now up for its second reading at the next Myrtle Beach City Council Meeting on Sept. 10.

The other 35 percent of the revenue is expected to come from membership fees for the dog park bar.

The Wagbar North Asheville location has membership prices currently set at $175 for an annual membership, $25 for a monthly membership, $10 for a day pass and $70 for a 10 visit punch card.

Humans without furry friends can get in for free, and must be 18-years-old or older to enter, according to their site.

All dogs are required to be spayed and neutered, at least six months-old and have proof of their Rabies, Bordetella and Distemper vaccines, according to Wagbar’s requirements.

In addition to serving alcohol beverages, the Wagbar in North Asheville is also home to the Palms Cuban American Kitchen food truck. Their menu features a Mojo Turkery Cuban Sandwich, Yuca Fries, Frita Burger Sliders and Tostones Nachos.
