What is your favorite thing about the Myrtle Beach area?

Being a people watcher, I love the different people who are here. I also like that depending on where you live in Horry County, you are no more than 20 or 30 minutes from a beach. There are so many beaches to explore.

Why do you call the Myrtle Beach area home?

I have vacationed in Myrtle Beach for more than 40 years, since I was a child. My love for the area developed into a job opportunity where I not only get to continue my writing career but also shell any time I want.

What is your favorite spot in the Myrtle Beach area?

I love to set up my beach chair at The Point in Cherry Grove in North Myrtle Beach. However, I feel nostalgic every time I see the blue railroad bridge beside the Intracoastal Waterway bridge on US 501 because it was always a sign that I had made it to Myrtle Beach.

What is your favorite thing about the Myrtle Beach area?

Even though we live in a quickly growing area, each of our communities have their own authentic flavor and a history that I feel a connection to. Before we moved home, my wife and I would talk about how the closer we got to the beach, the more we relaxed we would feel. Driving across a waterway bridge was always a sigh of relief. It still is.

Why do you call the Myrtle Beach area home?

I was raised in Conway, SC and am proud to be a native of Horry County. I’ve had the opportunity to travel the world with my cameras, but my long term goal was always to return home and help tell the stories of my home town.

What is your favorite spot in the Myrtle Beach area?

I’m drawn to the salt marshes on either end of the Grand Strand. Most of my free time is spent playing with my kids in the tidal creeks.

What do you like most about your beat?

I really enjoy reporting exclusive stories on the local tourism economy, business and real estate community, golf industry and Coastal Carolina football team. Working in in-depth journalism has always been my passion, and I love learning new subjects and reporting about them. I’ve had the opportunity to report on massive new development projects, the future of our capstone vacation property, Broadway at the Beach, and the history of nightlife culture in the Myrtle Beach area. The Sun News also provides me, as a reporter, the opportunity to cover so many exciting topics in a digital format and collaborate with others in the newsroom to help immerse our readers in new experiences happening in our community. In my more than a year here, I’ve had the chance to report on many different subjects. I’ve covered a PGA Tour tournament, the World’s Strongest Man Contest, two elections and an entire college football season. There’s always something exciting to report on, and I love covering these stories.

What is your favorite thing about the Myrtle Beach area?

While I enjoy the bustle of the Myrtle Beach area, my favorite thing about the Grand Strand is there are so many tranquil places I can go that showcase the natural beauty of the Lowcountry environment.

Why do you call the Myrtle Beach area home?

I call the Myrtle Beach area home because it allowed me to pursue my dream of being a journalist and a sports reporter covering college football.

Why did you join the Sun News?

I previously worked at The Sun News’ sister publication, The Island Packet, as an intern reporter covering the Hilton Head Island government during the 2022 summer before my senior year in college. I really enjoyed the experience of working at The Packet and living in South Carolina. As my senior year progressed, I hoped there’d be an opportunity to return to South Carolina and again. When searching for a job before graduation, my former editor at The Island Packet reached out and told me about a job opening in Myrtle Beach at The Sun News covering the Grand Strand economy, tourism, golf and CCU sports. The chance to return to Palmetto State and become a business journalist, combined with the chance to pursue my dream of being a sports reporter, was an excellent opportunity I couldn’t pass up.

What makes the Sun News special?

From my experience as a reporter, I appreciate The Sun News’ commitment to providing in-depth stories to our community, reporting exclusive stories and covering the growing Grand Strand area. The news team always strives to report complex stories and highlight important subjects to the residents of the Myrtle Beach area. At the beginning of my career in journalism, I’ve appreciated being in a newsroom that expects its reporters to cover such a diverse range of subjects in such an in-depth fashion. The Sun News grants reporters these crucial responsibilities, and I am proud to be a part of this newsroom.

What’s a fun fact about you?

What is your favorite thing about the Myrtle Beach area?

I preach that the Myrtle Beach area is one of the best East Coast beach destinations for visitors and locals alike. I love the long stretch of beaches and waterway, but also all the restaurants and activities that come along with being a top tourism destination. I have lived in several beach communities, and Myrtle Beach has a wonderful mix of events, attractions, food, and a great lifestyle that make this area great to call home.

What is your favorite spot in the Myrtle Beach area?

My two favorite spots are Brookgreen Gardens and my neighborhood. I started volunteering last year at the garden to get out, meet new people and spend some time in nature. I have met so many outstanding staff members, volunteer and guests during my time working at various events and just strolling the gardens on the weekends. I also love my neighborhood in Market Common because everyone moved in around the same time with the new construction. Everyone has been so friendly and helpful. All my neighbors made a conscious decision to move here and they say regularly, “it’s another wonderful day in the Myrtle”. Our neighbors in Market Common have become a second family, and our old rescue dog, Jack, loves walking the streets to greet his human friends and get treats.

Why did you join the Sun News?

I joined the Sun News because I love community journalism. I have lived and worked in big and smaller cities. Myrtle Beach is a wonderful size for great local journalism, and the stories we produce can hold people accountable, uplift those with great stories, and show all sides of living in this community. I wanted to be part of the Sun News team to continue the tradition of great local journalism at the beach and help grow our digital audience.

What makes the Sun News special?

The Sun News is not the print product in your mailbox or the grocery store. It is a combination of reporters, editors, advertising specialists, support staff, and other leaders who are diverse, caring, and driven to provide readers with the facts and grow with the community. Everyone on staff is here because this is where they want to be, and that makes for a fun and happy group of peers.

What’s a fun fact about you?

My older sister and I are complete opposites in every way. We never got along and have very little in common. As we have grown and hopefully matured, we now enjoy a healthy sibling relationship, which proves that time and understanding make anything possible.

What is your favorite thing about the Myrtle Beach area?

There’s always something to do. I’m more of a city person so moving to a town of roughly 30,000 people made me nervous but I can always find something fun to do, even in the off-season.

What is your favorite spot in the Myrtle Beach area?

The inlet of Cherry Grove. Our photojournalist Jason Lee is kind enough to let me borrow his kayaks and paddle around the water. I especially love getting lost in the channels behind Waites Island and watching the wildlife.

Why did you join the Sun News?

The Sun News likes to bring in new journalists and help guide them through their first few years as a reporter. As a recent college grad, I appreciate the support I get from my editors.

What makes the Sun News special?

The tight-knit nature of the newsroom. We are able to work remotely but we all often work together in the office by choice.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I can give you an obnoxious number of fun facts about the Twilight saga.
