Flavor Flav gifts Jordan Chiles a bronze clock he made on VMAs stage: ‘You deserve everything’

Jordan Chiles may not be a singer, but that didn't stop her from picking up some hardware at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 11.

Chiles, who was controversially stripped of her bronze medal in the floor exercise at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, got a pretty cool consolation prize at the VMAs when rapper and legendary hype man Flavor Flav presented her with a bronze clock to wear around her neck, in the same vein as the signature clocks he wears.

Before the pair announced the winner of the night's first award, the rapper said he wanted to make a “little Olympics moment” and addressed the controversy around the Chiles' medal.

“I know they tried to take your medal away from you. But you know what? I got you something that they can’t take away from you,” he said as he gave her the clock and the crowd roared in approval.

Flavor Flav, who sponsors the U.S. women’s water polo team, also said he had “prize money” for Chiles, although it is not clear what he meant by that. TODAY.com has reached out to his rep for comment about his remark about the money.

“Jordan, you did your thing. You deserve everything,” he said.

“What an honor,” responded Chiles, who did win a gold medal in Paris as part of the United States' victory in the team competition.

Chiles previously addressed the medal controversy at the Forbes Power Women’s Summit on Sept. 11, People reported.

“The biggest thing that was taken from me was that it was the recognition of who I was. Not just my sport, but the person I am,” Chiles said about the matter.

The 65-year-old rapper had revealed on X Aug. 12 a bronze clock necklace he had custom made for the 23-year-old gymnast. The video, set against a backdrop of an American flag, showcased the blinged-out piece adorned with bronze rhinestones.

"USA gonna Fight the Powers that be,,, in the meantime between time,,, Imma always a man of my word @ChilesJordan," he captioned the post.

The rapper’s reveal of the necklace came days after he offered to create a one-of-a-kind item for Chiles in the wake of a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling that stripped her of the bronze medal in the floor exercise. After an appeal, the court lowered her score and said it would "reallocate" her medal to Romania’s Ana Bărbosu.

“Ayyy YOOOO @ChilesJordan,,, imma make you a BRONZE CLOCK NECKLACE,,, and that’s something NO ONE else has,” the rapper and official Team USA water polo hype man wrote on X Aug. 11. “Hit me up my girl,,, I gotchu,!!!”

Chiles initially received a 13.666 in the women's gymnastics floor finals Aug. 5. However, Team USA submitted an inquiry contending she was improperly credited for one of her skills. The judges then raised her score to 13.766, securing her bronze medal win over Bărbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, who also represented Romania.

Romanian officials responded by filing a complaint with the CAS, arguing the inquiry was not submitted within the 1-minute deadline. After, the CAS recommended Chiles’ original floor routine score be reinstated, and the International Olympic Committee said Aug. 11 that Chiles would need to return the bronze medal.

Hours later, USA Gymnastics said in a statement that it would submit video evidence to the CAS, claiming coach Cecile Landi filed the inquiry in 47 seconds.

On Aug. 12, USA Gymnastics announced on X that the CAS rejected the appeal to have Chiles' bronze medal reinstated.

“USA Gymnastics was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented,” the post said.

As of Aug. 12, the CAS' decision to strip Chiles of the bronze medal stands.

“We are deeply disappointed by the notification and will continue to pursue every possible avenue and appeal process, including to the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to ensure the just scoring, placement, and medal award for Jordan,” USA Gymnastics said.

Amid the controversy, Chiles shared three broken-heart emoji to her Instagram story Aug. 10, later writing that she would be “taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health.”

Meanwhile, Gina Chiles is ensuring that her daughter hears about Flavor Flav’s thoughtful gesture. After seeing the reveal of the necklace, Gina Chiles responded, “Thank you. It means the world. As you can imagine, she’s not on social media at the moment. I will pass it along to her.”

Flavor Flav isn't the only one showing support for Chiles. Simone Biles also expressed her solidarity, sharing a heartfelt photo to her Instagram story. The image captured Biles hugging a tearful Chiles, with several heart emoji over the picture.

“Sending you so much love Jordan,” Biles wrote in the post. “keep your chin up olympic champ! we love you!”
