A fly on food and ‘soiled’ food containers at a Miami bagel place bordering Coral Gables

Filth as ubiquitous as the flies got a Miami bagel restaurant across the street from Coral Gables shut down for a day last week after a state inspection.

Tuesday’s inspection of Toasted Bagelry & Deli, 3693 SW 22nd Ter.., was listed as a routine inspection by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation and is the second this year for the breakfast-and-lunch place separated from Coral Gables by the Pei Wei next door and Southwest 37th Avenue.

A Stop Sale landed on cut lettuce along with a fly.

Among the more than 25 other flies counted by the inspector, more than eight were “in the condiment/coffee/iced tea station at the front counter, flying by plastic utensils and sugar packets;” another three were “resting on dispensers with iced coffee;” three zipped about the prep area; and one landed on an orange juice lid inside a drink carrier for the customers.

The cookline handwash sink didn’t have any paper towels, blower or equipment for drying hands.

“Cardboard used to line food-contact shelves,” as in a prep table shelf and a dry storage area shelf.

In the front counter and bakery area, wet wiping cloths that should be in sanitizing solution between uses were “stored on the countertops.”

Toasted wasn’t as soggy Wednesday and passed re-inspection.
