Former Coldwater EMS employee might get additional charges

Sep. 16—CELINA — A former Coldwater Emergency Medical Service employee might receive more charges after being indicted on 20 counts related to allegedly stealing drugs from the EMS agency.

In October 2023, Ashlee Heinl-Botkin, 40, of Coldwater, was charged with eight counts of theft of drugs, fourth-degree felonies; three misdemeanor counts of theft; four counts of possession of a fentanyl-related compound, fifth-degree felonies; four misdemeanor counts of possession of drugs, and one count of tampering with records, a third-degree felony. The indictment said the drugs taken included fentanyl, diazepam and Benadryl.

The charges came about after a routine inventory was done at the facility, and medication was missing from the secured medication box.

"While preparing this matter for trial, the state obtained evidence of potential additional crimes, and the matter remains under investigation," Mercer County Assistant Prosecutor Erin Minor wrote in a motion to continue the trial.

The jury trial scheduled to start Oct. 1 was canceled, and an attorney phone conference took its place.
