Grandpa Moustache brings award-winning cheesecake to North Myrtle Beach. Where to get them

Peter Brown has been perfecting his cheesecake recipe while fighting crime in New York City and raising five boys.

And now, after 30 years of baking his dessert, the retired New York City Police sergeant is bringing his cheesecakery to North Myrtle Beach.

Brown will open Grandpa Moustache’s Cheescakes this fall in the North Village Shopping Center on U.S. 17 South.

And yes, Brown does have a mustache. But the name is not necessarily because of that.

“(The) name came to be when our grandchildren were younger,” Brown said.

It was confusing about which “grandpa” the children were talking about, so they began to describe Brown as “the grandpa with the mustache,” which eventually turned into Grandpa Mustache, Brown said.

Brown and his wife, June, moved to Little River a few years ago, and they decided to reestablish his cheesecake business in South Carolina.

Brown had been selling his cheesecakes since 2013, most recently from a rented commercial kitchen in New York, as well as providing them to restaurants to sell. But after the space he was occupying had been sold, he and his wife decided it was time to fulfill their lifelong dream of moving to the South full-time so they could enjoy their retirement closer to their children and of course, the warmer weather.

Since moving to Little River, Brown has been baking cheesecakes for family and his neighbors.

It’s just one of many flavors that Brown makes using his plain cheesecake recipe, which doesn’t change. Other flavors include key lime, chocolate, butter pecan, Baileys Irish Cream, keto, gluten-free, and sugar-free.

Brown had won three years in a row for his cheesecake at the New Jersey State Fair, taking home 13 ribbons in total.

Brown started with a recipe he got from a buddy, making the desserts for family and friends. However, a few years later, Brown couldn’t find the original recipe so using what he remembered of the ingredients, he began to taste test and developed a new recipe.

Brown also makes rice pudding, which will also be available.

But for Brown, the cheesecake is for other people.

“I don’t eat cheesecake,” Brown said. “I have never eaten cheesecake. My wife likes cheesecake.”

She liked it so much that she, too, retired from nursing to help Brown operate his business.

The new location is currently undergoing renovations, and in the meantime, Brown is continuing to develop new tastes, including perfecting a turtle cheesecake flavor.
