Suspect kills himself after shooting at cops during high-speed chase in Mansfield: police

A man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he led police on a high-speed chase during which he fired multiple shots at officers, according to Mansfield police. No officers were injured.

The chase ended near the intersection of East Broad Street and Texas 360 in Mansfield shortly after 1 p.m. Monday.

The suspect crashed into another vehicle and then shot himself as officers approached him on foot, Mansfield police said.

Mansfield Assistant Police Chief Travis Waybourn said at least one officer returned fire during the pursuit but that no officers fired shots at the scene of the crash.

The chase began around 12:30 p.m. after the driver, whose identity hasn’t been released, showed his gun to officers and fled when they attempted to pull him over for a traffic stop, Waybourn said.

Mansfield police had received several calls about a wrong-way, possibly intoxicated driver in the 2200 block of FM 917. The driver was the only person in the car. Police pursued him through parts of Johnson and Tarrant counties before the driver crashed into an uninvolved vehicle, Waybourn said.
