The Kansas City Chiefs continued to try to upgrade their secondary while claiming a player off waivers Wednesday.

The Chiefs picked up Eric Scott, a 6-foot, 197-pound defensive back who attended high school at Basehor-Linwood in Kansas. Scott, 26, was a sixth-round pick of the Cowboys last season.

The Chiefs also lost one player through the waivers process, as the New England Patriots selected 2024 undrafted free agent linebacker Curtis Jacobs.

Scott started his collegiate career at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas, before transferring to Southern Miss. He has yet to play in an NFL regular-season game, though he had an interception and pass breakup during three preseason contests this month.

KC has been thin at cornerback this preseason after trading L’Jarius Sneed in March. Trent McDuffie is back, but Jaylen Watson (shoulder), Joshua Williams (hamstring) and Nazeeh Johnson (knee) have all missed practice at times in the last month while recovering from injuries.

Jacobs, a 6-1 linebacker out of Penn State, had seven tackles for the Chiefs in three preseason games.

In other Chiefs news, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported Wednesday that the Chiefs were signing former Broncos running back Samaje Perine, who was released by Denver on Tuesday.

Perine, 28, is known as a pass-catching back — he had 50 receptions for 455 yards last season. He could project to as fill the role that Jerick McKinnon had with the Chiefs last season.

The Chiefs will have to release two players to make room for Scott and Perine on their 53-man roster. On Wednesday afternoon, the team announced it had waived cornerback Nic Jones.

Schultz also reported Wednesday that former Patriots quarterback Bailey Zappe would be joining KC’s practice squad. The 25-year-old Zappe, selected in the fourth round of the 2022 draft by New England, started eight games for the Patriots the last two seasons.

Receiver Nikko Remigio will be returning to Chiefs’ practice squad, The Star’s Sam McDowell reported Wednesday via a source. Schultz reported that receiver Jusytn Ross will also be going to KC’s practice squad.
