Kamala Harris reveals what she was doing when Biden called to say he was dropping out of race

Vice President Kamala Harris revealed what she was doing when President Joe Biden called to tell her he was dropping out of the presidential race.

In an interview with CNN that aired on Aug. 29, Harris joked that she'd reveal "a little too much information" about her historic morning.

She said it was a Sunday and her family was visiting her.

"My family was staying with us, including my baby nieces, and we had just had pancakes," she said, laughingly adding that her great nieces had just asked her to make them more bacon.

"We were sitting down to do a puzzle and then the phone rang and it was Joe Biden," she said.

The vice president, who is the Democratic Party’s nominee for president, is the great-aunt of Amara and Leela, daughters of Meena Harris and granddaughters of Kamala Harris’ younger sister, Maya Harris.

For the final night of the Democratic National Convention, the two joined actor Kerry Washington onstage in Chicago to help teach viewers how to pronounce their "auntie's" name.

It's not the first time Amara and Leela have turned out to support their great-aunt.

Over the years, they have been by her side at significant milestones, including the inaugural parade.

Amara Ajagu, 8

Born in June 2016, Amara is already following in her great-aunt's footsteps. In a 2019 interview with Mother Magazine, Meena Harris shared that some of the first words her oldest daughter learned to say were about justice and empowerment.

“It’s your duty, and our family’s duty, to be informed and involved," Meena Harris told the magazine at the time. "The older one has known how to say ‘Phenomenal Woman’ and ‘Black Power’ since she learned to talk.”

Leela Ajagu, 6

On Instagram, Meena Harris often shares glimpses of Leela’s lively nature, describing her as a “wild child” with clear second-child traits.

"She brings enthusiasm and humor to all things, a true life of the party, and we’re just lucky to be her invited guests," Meena Harris captioned a birthday tribute to her daughter shared in February 2024.

A New York Times photo of Leela watching Harris' August 2024 speech at the DNC also went viral. In her Aug. 29 interview with CNN, Harris responded to the public's positive reaction to the image.

"I was deeply touched by (the photograph)," Harris said. "It's the back of her head, her two little braids and then I'm in the front... it's very humbling in many ways."

Harris went on to say her great-niece had "a lot to talk about" following the DNC. "She listened to everything," Harris laughed.
