Lady Cats edge Hobbs for team title

Sep. 10—LOVINGTON — Clovis High's girls edged Hobbs for team honors while the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats claimed individual championships in Saturday's Lovington Invitational cross country meet.

The Lady Cats went 1-3-4 in the event to finish with 30 points and edge Hobbs by three points in the five-team competition. Meantime, the Clovis boys finished with 59 points and second to Hobbs (30) in a seven-team field.

Sophomore Brooke Newcomer took individual honors for the girls, covering the 5K course in 20 minutes, 10.02 seconds. Senior Gabi Foggie placed third at 20:27.49, while freshman Roselia Morales followed at 20:36.36.

Rounding out the team's performance were junior Jarelly Navarette, 11th in 22:14.21; senior Kira Tree, 14th in 22.29.58; junior Jocelyn Foggie, 16th in 23:16.30, and freshman Jelena Maldonado, 18th in 23:53.21.

Portales High also ran a girls squad. The Lady Rams were led by Brianna Aguilar, 23rd in 25:48.08, while Azian Smith came in 27th in 26:21.27, Kloe Ruiz was 29th in 26:29.48, Rita Garza was 32nd in 27.25.92, and Emily Bustamante finished 33rd in 30:43.27.

Senior Sammy Fuentes took boys honors for the Cats, finishing in a time of 15.54.70. Other Clovis results included freshman Marquez Lippman, 12th in 17:59.30; freshman Ryder Bonney, 13th in 18:07.83; senior Victor Sanchez, 14th in 18:08.36; freshman Connor McQuiggan, 19th in 18:46.77; senior Rudy Ledezma, 22nd in 19:17.14, and senior Angel Diaz, 40th in 21:18.06.

Clovis squads return to action on Saturday in the Lubbock Christian Invitational. Next up for the PHS girls is the New Mexico Military Invitational on Sept. 21 in Roswell.
