Locals to pick logo for town's 800th anniversary
A new logo is being created to celebrate a town's 800th anniversary and people have been asked to pick their favourite design.
North Shields residents have been asked to pick one of three designs which will be used during a year of events in the town.
The winning logo will feature on the new North Shields 800 website, social media accounts and posters.
Labour MP Alan Campbell, who is chair of the North Shields 800 Committee, said the celebrations were being driven by a "fantastic community effort" and it was fitting that residents would choose the logo.
One of the emblems was submitted by local designer Kimberley Creative, while the other two were created by North Tyneside Council's graphic design team.
The local authority said the designs represented the town's maritime heritage and its growing reputation as an arts and culture destination.
"Asking the public to choose is a great way of getting more people involved and interested in the celebrations, ahead of what is set to be an exciting year of events in 2025," Mr Campbell said.
'Inspiring pride'
North Shields was founded in 1225 as a village made up of huts, called shiels, on what is now the Fish Quay.
The fishing port served Tynemouth Priory but grew into a larger harbour and town.
North Shields 800 is set to feature a number of events throughout 2025.
These will include a parade along the Fish Quay, exhibitions, street art murals and performing arts.
There will also be a parade of sail boats and a blessing of the fishing fleet.
North Tyneside Mayor, Norma Redfearn, said: "North Shields 800 is all about inspiring pride in the town and bringing in visitors to discover its rich history and vibrant hospitality."
