One of the men charged after the pistol-whipping death of a Caldwell man last year pleaded guilty this month.

The man, Kyle McGinnis, was the only one of three men to be charged with murder last year after they allegedly attempted a violent robbery, according to Statesman reporting. However, all three were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, burglary, aggravated assault and a weapons enhancement.

The plea agreement said that McGinnis will plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter with a weapons enhancement and burglary, with specific language that he entered the home with the intent to commit aggravated assault.

“This homicide does not define Caldwell, nor does it represent the tens of thousands of amazing men and women who make Caldwell their home,” said Caldwell police chief Rex Ingram in a release at the time. “Justice will be served in this matter, and I am confident that the next time these individuals want to invade another person’s castle, they will think twice!”

McGinnis is scheduled to be sentenced on January 23.

The prosecution’s maximum sentencing recommendation would be 25 years fixed, followed by 15 years indeterminate, court records show. The defense will be able to argue for less time.

Caldwell Police responded in August 2023 to a shooting and found 44-year-old Jeremy Jones with life-threatening injuries, according to previous Statesman reporting. Jones died while en route to the hospital, police said at the time.

During the incident, the three men were shot at and two were later detained after they went to the hospital with gunshot wounds, according to previous reporting.
