Man shot by Roswell police after trying to attack bus driver dies, police say

ROSWELL, Ga. - A man who Roswell police say charged them with a weapon was shot by officers Tuesday afternoon and later died, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The shooting happened near 10900 Alpharetta Highway.

According to preliminary reports, an adult male armed with an edged weapon attempted to stab a MARTA bus driver and then ran away.

Officers found the man in the area walking along Alpharetta Highway near Mansell Road and when confronted, he allegedly pulled out a pair of scissors and rushed towards the officers. Officers unsuccessfully attempted to tase the man and shot the man as he continued to advance towards them. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No police officers were injured in the confrontation.

Yusi Li works nearby and told FOX 5 the whole ordeal was shocking.

"I see a whole line of police cars blocking the entire road I've never seen so many police cars in my entire life," said Li. "There was an ambulance and sirens, just keep going, nonstop. I would never expect something like this."

The man's identity has not yet been released.

His body was taken to the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

Alpharetta Highway was closed between Houze Way and Mansell Road for several hours as investigators gathered evidence.

"When you get to the point where you have to worry about officers being safe because people aren't afraid of them anymore, it's a scary world," said Patsy Seay, who works across the street from where the shooting happened.

Seay says she can't stop thinking about everyone who was involved.

"All I could do when I heard what happen was to start praying for the officers, for the family of the guy who was shot," said Seay.

In line with department policy, the GBI has been called in to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting.
