Michigan State Fair shooting: 14-year-old killed, another teen hurt

NOVI, Mich. (FOX 2) - A teen was killed, and a second was injured during a shooting Saturday at the Michigan State Fair in Novi.

According to police, two 14-year-old Detroit boys were shot in the parking lot of the Suburban Collection Showplace just before 10 p.m.

Novi police said officers stationed at the Michigan State Fair heard gunshots coming from the parking lot near Grand River Avenue. Police say initial radio traffic came out as an active shooter, which prompted a very heavy police response from several surrounding law enforcement agencies.

Two 14-year-old victims were shot. Both were transported to the hospital where one died from his injuries. The other is in stable condition.

Investigators say the two victims took an Uber from Detroit to Farmington Hills and then another Uber from there to the Fair with some friends. Police say the incident stemmed from an argument throughout the week which occurred in other communities that carried over to Saturday night at the Fair parking lot.

Police have no suspects in custody and no suspect information at this time. There is no further threat to the community.

On Sunday afternoon the Michigan State Fair released the following statement:

"There was an incident that occurred last night outside the perimeter of the Michigan State Fair involving an isolated shooting resulting from an altercation. The entire Michigan State Fair family grieves for the loss of such a young life and for all those affected.

The Michigan State Fair and community law enforcement partners are committed to the safety of the guests and participants. Safety is the top priority and the State Fair had increased safety measures in place including weapons detection systems and increased police presence onsite."

It continued to state that the State Fair will be closing the box office and entry at 6pm and the fairgrounds will be closing at 7pm on Sunday and Monday.  For the remainder of the fair, any attendees under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to enter.

Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to contact the Novi Police Department at 248-348-7100.
