Prep football roundup: Stanislaus District teams face tough out-of-area competition

Stanislaus District high school football teams took on some quality out-of-area opponents in Week 3.

Turlock welcomed the 2023 Central Section Division I runner up, Central of Fresno, and took them to the wire. Central Catholic hit the road this week, facing Central Catholic of Oregon, currently the state’s No. 1 ranked team.

Gregori, Patterson, Enochs, Ripon and Beyer all faced Sac-Joaquin Section foes this week. The Tigers and Eagles earned bounce back victories after falling in close Week 2 contests.

Here are results from the full slate of Friday night matchups:

Central-Fresno 28, Turlock 22: The Bulldogs gave up a pick-six to the Grizzlies for the first score of the game. After falling behind 21-8 at halftime, Turlock outscored the defending Central Section Division I runners-up 14-7 in the second half.

Atwater 31, Gregori 7: Atwater was dominant in the second half after going ahead 10-7 at the end of two quarters. The Falcons held Gregori scoreless for the second half while scoring 21 points to remain perfect on the season. Gregori falls to 1-2 and travels to Livermore next week.

Patterson 38, Lathrop 17: Patterson got back in the win column Friday night with their second double-digit win this season. They led 24-17 at the half and the defense held Lathrop scoreless in the final two quarters.

El Capitan 34, Beyer 0: The Patriots could not find the end zone Friday night against a stingy El Capitan defense. Both teams entered the matchup 1-1 on the season. Beyer has a bye next week then will look to get back to .500 in their first WAC game against Johansen.

East Union 45, Ripon 38: Anthony Morales passed for five touchdowns and rushed for another as East Union beat Ripon in a shootout. Ripon was marching late in the fourth quarter but was forced into a turnover on downs, ultimately ending the comeback.

Bear River 37, Davis 32: The Spartans fell just short of their second win, falling to the Bruins on the road in Grass Valley. Davis has a Week 3 bye before opening up WAC play with head coach Trevor Mew’s alma mater, Central Valley, in Week 5.

Berean Christian 44, Modesto Christian 0: The Crusaders were shut out for the second straight week Friday night. The Eagles scored in each of the first three quarters to advance to 2-0. The Crusaders fell to 0-2 and play Stone Ridge Christian in their final non-league game next week.

Central Catholic (Oregon) 45, Central Catholic 29: The Raiders fell to the top-ranked team in Oregon Friday night on the road. They made it a four-point game at one point, but the Rams pulled away late in the second half. The Raiders return to California and play Bishop Manogue next week.

Enochs 49, Buhach Colony 13: The Eagles got back on the right track with a blowout win over Buhach Colony on the road Friday night. Enochs has put up over 40 points in both wins this season and faces East Union and Merced to finish non-league play.
