Week 6 prep football games to watch

1. Artesia at Lovington, 7 p.m. Friday: What's not to love here? Two longtime rivals, reunited this season in the same classification, and the same district, and playing their most important regular-season game against one another in many, many years. The Wildcats are ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, the Bulldogs No. 2. Environment should be beyond electric in Lovington.

2. Bernalillo at Española Valley, 7 p.m. Friday: Once upon a time, it would have been baffling to put a game like this so high at the top of the list. But these are no longer two basketball-primary schools. The Spartans are undefeated. The Sundevils are undefeated. And this is a tremendous District 1-4A matchup. Two potential top four seeds for the playoffs.

3. Silver at St. Pius, 6 p.m. Thursday, Nusenda Community Stadium: Fascinating game here, between an annual power in the Colts and an up-and-comer in the Sartans, both of them with relatively young groups. Is St. Pius a serious 4A challenger? The result of this game will tell us much.

4. Texico at West Las Vegas, 7 p.m. Friday: An attractive matchup between Class 2A's top-ranked Wolverines, the defending state champions in their class, and the Dons, ranked No. 4 in Class 3A. Lots of playmakers on the field in a matchup that could produce plenty of points.

5. Valley at Highland, 11 a.m. Saturday, Milne Stadium: These are two teams who have been struggling, but this, because of slow starts in their district, suddenly becomes of vital interest to both the Vikings and the Hornets.
