For the first three weeks of the high school football season, no team has played so many close games as the Prosser Mustangs.

Corey Ingvalson’s team lost its first two games by a total of 3 points — a 15-14 opening night loss at Ephrata, and a 23-21 road loss to Toppenish.

So there had to be a sense of relief when Prosser hung on to beat East Valley of Yakima 36-35 last Thursday.

Quarterback Jacob Rainer passed for 396 yards, completing 20 passes out of 32 attempts. He fired four TD passes, and also rushed 18 times for 51 yards and another score.

Rainer’s top target was Aaron Gonzalez, who grabbed 10 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns. Landon Bailey added 4 catches for 72 yards, and two more touchdowns.
