Ready for some Motown hits? Where and when you can catch the show in Modesto

The always popular Picnic at the Pops brings the music of Motown to the E.&J. Gallo Winery grounds, courtesy of the Modesto Symphony Orchestra. Country hit-making band Sawyer Brown will play the Gallo Center for the Arts while Judy Collins is set for a concert at the State Theatre. These are just some of the entertainment options in the Modesto region Sept. 7-13.

Picnic at the Pops!

Modesto Symphony Orchestra’s annual season opening concert returns with “Picnic at the Pops! Dancing in the Street: The Music of Motown.” The program on the E.&J. Gallo Winery grounds features performers Chester Gregory, Crystal Monee Hall and Terron Brooks. The program includes hits by artists including Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, Martha Reeves, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, The Temptations and Stevie Wonder.

Country band Sawyer Brown brings its 40th Anniversary Tour to the Gallo Center. The band features Mark Miller (vocals), Gregg Hubbard (keys/piano), Joe Smyth (drums/percussion) and Shayne Hill (lead guitar). Miller, Hubbard and Smyth are founding members. Sawyer Brown’s latest album is “Desperado Troubadours.”

The State Theatre presents “An Evening With Judy Collins,” featuring the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter. Collins’ hits include “Both Sides Now,” “Send in the Clowns” and “Someday Soon.” Her 1967 album, “Wildflowers,” has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Autumn art

The Stanislaus Arts Council’s annual Autumn Art Exhibition opens at its new downtown Modesto museum. The exhibit features works inspired by the fall season in all mediums by artists from across California.

Ironstone concert

Five bands will join for a concert at the Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys. On the slate are classic heavy metal’s Dokken with guitarist George Lynch. Also playing will be metal bands Warrant and Steelheart and rock group Winger.
