New SC student test scores for 2023-24 show mixed results. See if your child’s school is failing

Less than 50% of students in multiple South Carolina elementary and middle school grades are performing math at grade level, new state test results show.

The results come by way of SC READY, a statewide testing method that annually measures how students are performing in English language arts and math. SC READY analyzed test scores for 3rd through 8th grades.

Students struggled the most with math in the previous school year, with 8th graders performing the worst — only 30.3% met or exceeded expectations. Overall, an average of 42.3% of all students in grades 3rd through 8th met or exceeded expectations in math.

Only the 3rd and 4th grades had more than 50% of students that did math at grade level. Specifically, 54.6% of 3rd graders and 51% of 4th graders met or exceeded expectations.

English performance was noticeably better, with more than 50% of students in each grade meeting or exceeding expectations. Fourth graders did the best, with 57.2% meeting or exceeding expectations.

Overall though, South Carolina students are still mostly performing worse than they did pre-COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, the data shows.

In a Monday press release, Richland One touted improvements its schools made on the SC READY tests, year-over-year.

The percentage of Richland One students that met or exceeded expectations in English increased in grades 3rd, 5th and 6th and remained steady in 4th and 8th. The 7th grade saw a drop in percentage, the press release states.

The percentage of Richland One students meeting or exceeding expectations for math improved for all grades except 8th grade.

“We are encouraged by the growth we have experienced in our students’ performance on state assessments, which reflects the hard work being done in all of our schools by our students, teachers, principals and support staff. We look forward to more growth during this academic year,” Richland One Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon said in the press release.
