West Nile Virus detected in Manchester mosquitoes

Jul. 16—A batch of mosquitoes has tested positive for West Nile virus in Manchester, health officials announced Tuesday.

"From this point in the season until there is a mosquito-killing frost, the risk of infection by mosquito-borne viruses may increase," Anna Thomas, Manchester's public health director, said in a written statement.

Residents and visitors should take steps to prevent mosquito bites to prevent exposure to the virus, she said.

Those steps include using an effective repellent with 30% DEET, avoiding being outdoors at dawn and dusk and removing standing water from around homes.

Symptoms of West Nile virus usually appear within a week after being bitten and include flu-like illness, fever, muscle aches, headaches and fatigue.

A small percentage of people who contract West Nile virus can develop a more serious central nervous system disease, including meningitis or encephalitis, Thomas said.

Residents should seek medical attention if they have symptoms.
