A woman has died after she was pulled from a canal in Staffordshire.

She was found in the water close to Burton Road in Whittington, near Lichfield, shortly before 10:00 BST on Monday.

Police and paramedics performed CPR on the woman before an ambulance took her to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Staffordshire Police said officers were investigating the circumstances surrounding her death, which was being treated as unexplained.

Det Sgt Oscar Hall said the force was also seeking to identify the woman "as a priority".

She was described as white, in her 60s or 70s, approximately 5ft tall, of a slim build and with red hair.

She was wearing dark-framed glasses, a black ribbed jumper, black trousers, beige open-toe sandals, a khaki-coloured coat and gold jewellery.

Police said two witnesses saw the woman between 08:00 and 08:45 BST near Swan Bridge in Whittington, where she was believed to have left a navy or black umbrella.
