NM Philharmonic announces 2024-25 classic season

Aug. 5—The New Mexico Philharmonic's 2024-25 classic season stars pianist Olga Kern, a concert version of Giacomo Puccini's "Tosca," the violinist Midori, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and more.

The concerts will take place at Popejoy Hall, 203 Cornell Dr. NE.

Kern will launch the season with a performance of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 on Oct. 12. The orchestra will follow the concerto with Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 4.

The philharmonic will present "Tosca in Concert" on Nov. 16, commemorating 100 years since Puccini's death. Soprano Carmen Giannattasio will sing the role of Tosca and Brazilian baritone Leonardo Neiva will play Scarpia.

"Mozart & Salieri" will jumpstart the new year on Jan. 18, 2025, in a concert featuring both voice and orchestra. The musicians will perform the overture to "Don Giovanni," the one-act opera "Mozart and Salieri" by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Mozart's "Requiem." The soloists will include soprano Amy Owens, mezzo-soprano Olga Perez Flora, tenor James Flora and baritone Carlos Archuleta.

On Feb. 1, 2025, famed violinist Midori will perform Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto. Afterward, the orchestra will play Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5.

On March 1, 2025, the musicians will perform Samuel Barber's Adagio. Pianist Michelle Cann will play Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4. Two of Aaron Copland's masterworks, his "Suite from Billy the Kid" and "El Salón México," round out the show.

On April 12, 2025, the music turns romantic with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. Brazilian violinist Guido Sant'Anna will helm the violin, followed by the orchestra's performance of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.6, "Pathétique."

On April 19, 2025, the philharmonic will pair with the New Mexico Ballet Company on "The Great Gatsby Ballet," based on the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic. The performance will feature characters like the villainous Tom, the naive Nick, love interest Daisy and the dreamer Gatsby.

The classics series will end on May 31, 2025, with the Mahler Symphony Cycle. Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 3 in d minor will set the stage for the finale with a 200-plus member performing arts ensemble. The performance will feature mezzo-soprano Lilia Istratii. Music director Roberto Minczuk conducts.
