Commuters of a major Northern Ohio highway may have to start pinching their pennies next year.

On Jan. 1, the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission will increase tolls on the Ohio Turnpike, a 241-mile roadway that relies primarily on toll revenue for maintenance, repairs and other infrastructure costs.

Prices depend on the type of vehicle and come in seven classes, spanning from cars and motorcycles, to campers and tractor-trailers.

In 2024, toll rates for E-Z Pass customers in a base passenger vehicle, class 1, will be $0.065 per mile, up from $0.061 in 2023. A commercial vehicle in class 5 will pay $0.204 per mile, compared to $0.189 last year.

A newsletter from the turnpike commission says the cost of highway design, construction and maintenance is higher than ever, as prices on materials, oil, labor and more have increased significantly since December 2020.

Customers who use an E-Z Pass will still save about 33% on toll rates compared to customers paying cash or card at each toll, according to the commission.
