Ohioans cannot trust Sherrod Brown to close southern border, deport illegals | Opinion

President Joe Biden recently announced an executive action allowing certain undocumented spouses and children of U.S. citizens to apply for lawful permanent residency without leaving the country. Ohio's Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, Bernie Moreno, called Biden's order an "amnesty scheme" that is wrong for Ohio and the country.

With the southern border completely overrun by an influx of millions of illegal migrants and the free-flow of fentanyl into our communities, Joe Biden’s border invasion has turned every state into a border state − including Ohio.

What is Biden’s solution? More mass amnesty for illegals. What does Sherrod Brown have to say about this disastrous proposal? Nothing.

Crossing our southern border is a crime itself, and yet, Biden wants to reward these criminals who break our laws, and Brown refuses to take a stance during an election year. As a legal immigrant whose family came to this country the right way, it is appalling that career politicians want to ignore this lawlessness.

The latest amnesty scheme shows once again that they favor the illegals who have crossed the border in violation of our nation’s immigration laws over the American people. On day one in office, with the support of his number-one rubber-stamp in the Senate, Biden reversed all of the effective border policies of the Trump administration that kept our border secure and our nation safe.

Since Biden took office, nearly 10 million migrants have entered our country illegally and overrun our border patrol agents. Now, Biden is continuing to support amnesty, and Brown refuses to oppose the administration’s proposal. Rather than secure the border and deport the millions of illegal migrants who lawlessly enter our country, Democrats in Washington instead want to grant mass amnesty.

The American people pay the price for open-border policies. Thanks to the influx of lawless border crossings under Biden and Brown’s watch, jobs are taken away from Ohioans, wages are driven down, taxpayers are forced to foot the bill for housing, health care, and government handouts for illegal immigrants, and important benefit programs like Social Security are drained. The way to preserve our Social Security net is to make certain it is there for Americans, not illegals.

Biden and Brown would rather prioritize illegal immigrants over the safety of Americans. This year, we’ve seen a historic influx of violent crime from illegal immigrants − including the deaths of Laken Riley and Rachel Morin, who were both murdered by illegals with previous records. Their deaths, and all of the violent crimes committed by illegals, were entirely preventable and are a direct consequence of Biden and Brown’s open-border policies.

Biden chooses to respond to the overrun border, fentanyl crisis, and spike in violent crime that he created with more amnesty, and while Brown refuses to take a stance during the toughest election of his career, we know that he has supported throughout his entire time in Washington.

During his tenure in the Senate, Brown refused to support legislation that would have funded efforts to detain and deport illegal immigrants convicted of a crime, has called the border wall “ludicrous,” supported funding for sanctuary city policies that allow illegals to roam free in our cities, voted against a Senate bill to set a mandatory minimum of five years imprisonment for deported felons who re-enter the country illegally, and likened the Trump-era Title 42 policy to the Holocaust.

Now, in an election year, Brown is trying to fool Ohioans into believing that he is tough on border security, while supporting Biden’s open-border policies every step of the way. This November, Ohioans cannot trust Sherrod Brown to close our border, deport illegals and protect our communities.

Bernie Moreno is the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Ohio. He is running against incumbent Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown in November.
