One pass shows how Patrick Mahomes challenges Trent McDuffie daily at Chiefs camp

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and cornerback Trent McDuffie were among those interviewed Tuesday during SiriusXM’s Town Hall from training camp.

SiriusXM NFL Radio hosts Bruce Murray and Alex Smith (the former KC quarterback) spoke with eight people with the Chiefs about a wide range of topics.

Interestingly, Mahomes and McDuffie each brought up one specific play from practice earlier in the day. It showed how the two stars work to make each other better each day.

“Trent, he’s special,” Mahomes said. “He’s a special player. I remember the first training camp, he wasn’t necessarily making every play, but he was always in perfect position. And then now he’s making those plays, and I think that he’s going to take off even more this year. He understands it.

“I tried to get him today, I threw it to the fullback on a go ball. I looked at him and was like, ‘I almost got you.’ Coach (Andy) Reid, he always said that (former Packers star) Brett Favre always used to go at Deion (Sanders) at least once every game. That’s like me with Trent. Every practice, I’m like, I’m gonna try it one time just to see if he’s paying attention. He’s done a pretty good job of stopping most of them.”

McDuffie spoke before Mahomes and also had talked about that play in particular.

“I was lined up against the running back. He ran a little go ball, and it was me and him,” McDuffie said. “Like there ain’t no way he’s getting the ball, you know what I mean? It’s just him and me and we’re just running and all of a sudden he goes for the ball. I dive and turn around and Pat’s just staring at me (saying), ‘I almost got you.’ He keeps me on my toes. So it’s been a lot of fun going against Pat every day.”

Iron sharpens iron, and that is on display daily at Chiefs training camp with Mahomes and McDuffie.
