Oreo to sell gluten-free cookies starting next year

Cookie-lovers, rejoice, 2021 is looking up.

Oreo announced Monday it would soon star selling a gluten-free version of its famous cookies.

“Milk’s Favorite Cookie, now in a Gluten Free version. Coming January 2021," the brand said in a tweet.

A gluten-free version of the Double Stuff variety of Oreo cookies will also be rolled out, the company said. A followup tweet added that both gluten-free versions of the cookies will be permanent parts of the product line.

“With the addition of the new line, Oreo invites snackers with a gluten intolerance or gluten sensitivities to enjoy our cookies too,” a Nabisco spokesperson told CNN.

Gluten Intolerance Group of North America approved the snacks, meaning the packages will carry the official gluten-free label.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat and other grains that can cause an allergic reaction in some, especially those with celiac disease.

The new cookies were a long time coming, the brand said.

“At Oreo, we take pride in regularly adding new choices and varieties based on what we’re hearing from our fans,” the brand said in a statement. “Oreo is always looking to welcome more people to experience the playfulness of Oreo cookies. We have been planning the launch of our Gluten-Free cookies for some time and are excited to give more fans the opportunity to experience the playfulness of Oreo cookies beginning in January 2021.”

Oreo will not be alone. Other major brands, such as Barilla, Dole, General Mills and Frito Lay, have started selling gluten-free versions of crowd-favorite food products.
