Parkside, JMB grab first wins, Decatur and Snow Hill move to 2-0 in storylines from Week 2

Two weeks of high school football have been played on Maryland's Eastern Shore, and while things are still unfolding very early in the season, teams are starting to formulate a hierarchy amongst themselves in the Bayside Conference.

Stephen Decatur and Snow Hill, the lone two Bayside South teams to grab wins in Week 1, continued their impressive starts to the season with blowout victories over non-Bayside opponents on Friday night. Parkside and James M. Bennett were able to grab their first victories of the season, with both teams winning in impressive fashion over the weekend.

There was a lot to follow in Bayside Conference football this past weekend, and here are some observations from Week 2 of Bayside South football:

Parkside grabs first win of the season in Week 2 most impressive victory

Parkside's KaRontez Bratten (1) rushes for a touchdown against North Caroline Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024, in Salisbury. Parkside defeated North Caroline 24-9.

The Parkside Rams were the lone Bayside South team to play on Saturday, as they took the field looking to bounce back from their season-opening loss to Kent Island. And bounce back is exactly what the Rams did, as they dominated North Caroline for much of the game and earned a 24-9 win, their first of the season.

Led by running backs Karontez Bratten and James Harmon, Parkside felt in control of the game, and once they got that first lead, their defense kept North Caroline in check whenever they tried to get themselves back into the game. Bratten ran in a pair of touchdowns and Harmon added a third on the day, while receiver Tavian Dashiell also proved useful.

While Decatur and Kent Island appear to be set up to be at the top of the Bayside Conference again this season, there is room for another team in the Bayside's group of 2A schools to emerge from the pack and be a contender. If Parkside continues to play like they did Saturday and improves as the season goes on, they certainly could be that team.

Decatur, Snow Hill continue their impressive starts to the season

Another week of football for Stephen Decatur and Snow Hill yielded much of the same results, as each of the two Worcester County football teams moved to 2-0 with blowout victories Friday night; and even more impressive, they each did so on the road.

Stephen Decatur traveled to Baltimore County to face Randallstown and came back to the shore with a 40-19 victory. New quarterback Johnny Hobgood threw five touchdowns on the day, with Decatur's loaded senior receiving corps of Trybe Wise, Zakhari Baker, Ethan Bradshaw and Davin Chandler each finding the end zone on Hobgood's passes. Chandler, in particular, put in a top performance, walking away with two touchdowns on offensive and an interception on defense.

Snow Hill on the the other hand traveled down to Virginia face Nandua, and the Eagles left with a shutout 29-0 win. More solid defense from the Eagles, along with quarterback Justin Shipley putting up touchdowns on the ground and in the air led the way for Snow Hill. Next up for the Eagles is a matchup against another Virginia team, Arcadia, as the Eagles have the chance to move to 3-0 before a home rival game against the county rival Decatur Seahawks.

Another team that grabbed a win Friday were the Bennett Clippers, who dominated Bayside South rival Washington in a 64-0 victory. After a close opening season game where they came just short of knocking off Polytech (DE), the Clippers came out took care of business against Washington for their first win of the season. With upcoming games against Decatur, Queen Anne's and city rivals Parkside in the coming weeks, the Clippers are officially in the win column.

Wi-Hi also had its home opener on Friday night, as it faced off against Easton. The Warriors grabbed a 35-0 shutout win, sending Wi-Hi to 0-2 on the year. While Wi-Hi had some promising offensive drives in the first half, it was unable to turn them into points, and Easton took advantage, led by quarterback Michael O'Connor. Next up for Wi-Hi is a home matchup against Queen Anne's, as the two 0-2 squads look to get a win that they each hope will jumpstart their season.
