Patrick Dempsey is no stranger to the spotlight. He's been acting for almost 40 years, first gaining mainstream recognition in the 1987 film Can't Buy Me Love. However, it was the starring role of Derek Shepherd on Grey's Anatomy in 2005 that made Dempsey a household name.
He left the show in 2015 after 12 seasons of playing the dreamy neurosurgeon but returned in a guest role for Season 17 to help the series celebrate doctors fighting on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since leaving Grey's, Dempsey has continued acting and appeared in movies like Disenchanted and Ferrari. He will next appear in the Dexter prequel series Dexter: Original Sin.

Patrick Dempsey has three children: a daughter, Talula Fyfe Dempsey, and twin boys, Darby Galen Dempsey and Sullivan Patrick Dempsey. Talula is 22 and the twins are 17.
Who is the mother of Patrick Dempsey's children?
Jillian Dempsey is the mother of all three of Patrick Dempsey's children. The two were married in 1999 after meeting at a Los Angeles hair salon where Jillian worked. She is a make-up artist and founder of the Jillian Dempsey makeup line, which launched in 2014.
Dempsey and his wife almost split in 2015, with Jillian going as far as filing for divorce. The couple spent the subsequent year in couple's therapy and have since reconciled.
"Everybody has their own path. Jill and I decided it was time to work on our issues and improve," the actor told PEOPLE after the couple reunited. "We wanted to be role models for our kids like, 'OK, if you have differences, you can work them out.'"
The couple celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in July. Dempsey posted a photo of the couple exchanging wedding rings at the ceremony to celebrate the milestone and wrote, "It feels like just yesterday! I can’t get over how quickly the time has gone by. Life would not be the same without you, your vision, your kindness, your compassion, your love, your sexiness, your intelligence, your warmth, your friendship, your wisdom. The love of my life, I’m truly grateful for all that you do and who you are. You’re an incredible mother, wife, friend, and partner @jilliandempsey."

Who are Patrick Dempsey's kids?
Talula Fyfe Dempsey
Talula is Dempsey's eldest child. She was born Feb. 20, 2002, and growing up, she loved riding to school with her dad in his favorite Porsche.
"My daughter, Talula, loves me to drive her to school in this," he said of the car during a Parade photoshoot in 2008. "She gets to sit next to me. We talk about all kinds of things. We listen to the news and discuss it. I remember when I would do stuff with my father and my mother. You want those moments. They go by very quickly, so you try to get them in when you can."
Talula is all grown up now and starting her own business, Talula's Kitchen, a pastry shop and food blog. Her dad posted his support of her business on Instagram in July.
"So proud and excited to announce @taluladempsey launched her new artwork and is now taking orders at the link on her bio @talulaskitchen," he wrote.
According to the Talula's Kitchen website, the young patissier studied at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and worked at the Michelin Star restaurant Gucci Osteria in Beverly Hills before venturing out to create her own custom line of pastries. Talula is currently attempting to master plant-based pastries to add to her offerings.

Darby Galen Dempsey
Dempsey's twin sons were born on Feb. 1, 2007. They are currently 17 years old and both are in high school. The actor told PEOPLE the fraternal twins not only have different hair colors—Darby is blond while Sullivan was born with black hair that lightened with age—but they also have different personalities. He described Darby as "reserved and quiet" compared to his jokester brother Sullivan.
Dempsey revealed in his 2016 PEOPLE cover story that Darby is an athlete and really loves playing soccer.

Like his twin brother, Sullivan is also 17 years old and in high school. Unlike his brother, however, Sullivan has inherited the acting but from his dad rather than a love of sports.
Dempsey does not frequently share pictures of his children on social media, but he did wish the boys a happy birthday back in February.
"Happy birthday to Darby and Sullivan," Dempsey captioned a throwback photo of himself and the boys when they were toddlers on Instagram. "I can't believe they are 17 today, growing into such fine young men, so proud!"
