Patrick Mahomes Sr. Pleads Guilty to Third DWI Charge, Agrees to Five-Year Probation

Patrick Mahomes Sr. pleaded guilty to his third charge of driving while intoxicated.

The 54-year-old former athlete — whose son is Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes — entered the guilty plea in Smith County, Texas on Tuesday, Aug. 27 just before a trial was set to begin on his third-degree felony charge, according to the court records obtained by PEOPLE.

Mahomes Sr. was arrested on the DWI charge, his third, in February after recording a blood alcohol content of 0.23 when an officer pulled him over in Tyler. Texas. The arrest came just days before his son led the Kansas City Chiefs to another Super Bowl victory.

Mahomes Sr. agreed to five years of probation and one year of "intense supervision," according to local news station KETK.

Records from the Smith County court filed on Tuesday say that Mahomes Sr. is set to return to court for a formal sentencing on Sept. 23. Judge Kerry L. Russell also submitted a request for a pre-sentence investigation on Mahomes Sr., per the records.

In addition to the DWI, Mahomes Sr. is facing a charge of driving without a valid license in Smith County court, per the records obtained by PEOPLE.

He was arrested on June 29 and submitted a plea of not guilty in late July. The pre-trial hearing on that charge is scheduled for Oct. 15.

According to KETK, the officer reported witnessing an open can of beer in the center console of Mahomes Sr.'s vehicle during the Feb. 3 arrest in Texas, and he was taken into custody after failing his field sobriety tests.

The former MLB pitcher also pled guilty to a DWI arrest in 2018, for which he served 40 days in a county jail. In 2016, according to Bleacher Report, he was charged with public intoxication during a game between TCU and his son's alma mater, Texas Tech.
