The cast of Netflix's new murder mystery The Perfect Couple have revealed that they protested against the show's opening dance sequence.

The six-part series, which centres on a wealthy family who falls under suspicion when a body is discovered near their home, opens with the entire cast performing a choreographed dance to Meghan Trainor's 'Criminals' on the beach.

While speaking to Variety, director Susanne Bier said she insisted on the routine because she wanted to do "something which had a lot of life and a lot of fun".

However, the cast weren't convinced and even began a WhatsApp group to try and get the dance taken out.

"Everyone was on that group saying they didn't want to do this because we just didn't understand," said Meghann Fahy, who plays social media influencer Merritt.

"I actually have a really, really huge issue with learning choreography so I was very nervous about it."

Ishaan Khattar, who plays Scooter, told the publication: "I don't think any of us could make sense of doing this choreography in these characters.

"We're like, 'Wait where does this fit into the scheme of things? This was not part of the assignment!'"

Nicole Kidman was also hesitant at first because she believed that her character Greer would watch the dance rather than take part.

However, she came around eventually, saying: "But I danced as Greer. I think it's great and I'm so glad they got us all to do it. 'Cause there's some joy in it."

Only Schrieber, who plays Greer's husband Tag, was up for it from the very beginning.

"I wasn't in that [WhatsApp] chain," he said. "The entire cast had a mutiny about this idea except for me, I was already in my trailer practicing the dance moves.

"I just like dancing and I was kinda disappointed when it came out that I'm not in it more because I thought I did it really well."

Despite the initial pushback, Fahy admitted that everyone was "very joyful" about the sequence by the end of the day, adding: "We all sort of ended up giving in to it. It was so fun and I actually weirdly think it's amazing."

The Perfect Couple is available on Netflix now.
